Detached brick ranch and garage before rat exclusion work

Rodent Control project

Sealing Rat Burrows Beneath a 1970s Erin Brick Ranch Garage

A homeowner found rats burrowing beneath the detached garage slab during winter. We traced the activity, placed bait stations, sealed accessible entry points and completed three visits with the garage secured.

Rat activity beneath the detached garage

During winter, the homeowner noticed fresh soil and burrowing along the edge of the detached garage slab. The garage sat apart from a one-story brick ranch on a large wooded lot, giving rats cover near the structure and a protected route beneath the concrete edge.

The concern was not only the visible digging. A detached garage can give rats a sheltered place to move around stored items, wall edges and slab joints before they test nearby openings. The homeowner called us to identify the route and reduce the chance of activity reaching the house.

The homeowner's goals

  • Find where the rats were traveling
  • Reduce activity beneath the garage slab
  • Seal accessible openings around the structure
  • Keep the plan focused on the garage and home

Burrows followed the garage slab edge

Our technician inspected the detached garage, the slab perimeter and nearby ground for fresh disturbance, rub marks and openings. The burrowing was concentrated where the slab met the surrounding soil, with wooded cover close enough to give rats a concealed approach.

The garage layout mattered to the plan. Older Erin homes often include detached outbuildings, crawl spaces or slab edges that need separate inspection from the living area. We found access points that could be addressed with exclusion, while the active route called for bait stations and follow-up checks.

Three visits from inspection to final check

  1. Inspect the garage and slab edge

We examined the burrows, slab perimeter, door threshold and nearby ground. Our technician mapped the active areas before placing control materials or sealing openings.

  2. Place bait stations

We positioned bait stations where rat activity was confirmed and where the equipment could remain managed around the detached garage. Placement stayed focused on the identified route rather than the whole property.

  3. Complete accessible exclusion

We sealed accessible gaps connected to the garage structure and slab edge. Exclusion helps remove the openings that let rats move beneath or into the building.

  4. Recheck activity

At the next visit, we looked for fresh disturbance, changes around the burrows and signs of continued movement. We adjusted the plan only where the inspection showed a need.

  5. Finish with a household review

At the final visit, we checked the bait stations and repaired exclusion points again. We explained what to watch for around the garage, slab edge and nearby wooded ground.

The garage route was addressed

After three visits, the active garage area had been treated with bait stations and accessible entry points had been sealed. The homeowner had a clear plan for watching the slab edge and reporting any new disturbance.

This winter job stayed focused on the detached garage rather than expanding into unrelated areas. Our team documented the work at each visit and used the follow-up inspections to confirm whether the rat route was still active.

What shaped this garage job’s cost

The investment reflected the inspection time, the number of visits and the physical work needed around a detached garage slab. We price each project from the conditions found on site, not from a one-size-fits-all package.

Three scheduled visits

The job required an initial inspection followed by return visits to check bait stations, review fresh activity and confirm the exclusion work.

Detached garage layout

A separate structure required its own inspection of the slab perimeter, door area and surrounding ground, in addition to considering the nearby ranch home.

Slab-edge exclusion

Sealing accessible gaps along the garage and slab edge added labor beyond bait-station placement and helped address the route rats were using.
